German fitness health club market showing lower churn

The German health club market is experiencing a lot lower cancellation rate when compared to other Europe countries with a reduction of just below 12% of members during the covid lock down. The figures have just been released by German health club industry association DSSV, the organization noted that members of health clubs in Germany declined by only 11.6 % during 2020, leaving the nation with 10.31 million gym members. With this churn rate it means across the market membership fell from 14% in 2019 to 12.4 %, just 1.4% of health clubs closed in 2020 with over 9500 health clubs still viable in GermanyThe fitness health club market generated revenues of €4.16bn during 2020 – a 24.5% decline from the €5.51bn figure in 2019.Unlike many other European countries where gyms are accessed on a pay-as-you-go basis or without the payment of a membership fee, contracts in German gyms are typically more binding and have enabled most operators to continue to collect dues during lockdown, with most offering a scheme whereby elapsed time is added to the end of a membership term. This has enabled the German gym sector to get through the pandemic in better shape than the sector in many other nations.
