New partnership between Lithuania and China

A new deal struck between the two nations will effectively allow Lithuania to be a strategic partner for Beijing as part of its ‘Silk Road Initiative’. Various agreements between the China Merchants Group and Klaipeda (which is a free economic zone) and its port mean that Lithuania may become a ‘hub’ of distribution for China’s goods in Eastern Europe.
Algirdas Butkevicius, Lithuania’s Prime Minister, has said of the agreement at a press release soon after a meeting with Xi Jinping, China’s President among other government leaders from Central and Eastern Europe, “We’ve talked that cooperation within ‘China plus 16’ is gaining momentum and is already bearing the first fruit, in particular through the 40-billion US dollar investment initiative ‘One Belt, One Road’. Lithuania and China discover new possibilities for cooperation, which opens the way for Lithuania to exports its products to the market of the fastest growing global economy.”
