FRHI to open Swissotel in Sofia

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is set to be the home of the country’s first Swissotel. The property, set to open in 2018, is said to boast 200 bedrooms and is being built along with three residential towers and 50,000 square metres of retail, entertainment and commercial space as part of the mixed-use development, Grand Kanyon Sofia.
The project has come to light through the Turkish developer Garanti Koza and will include Purovel Spa & Sport, the brands well-known spa design. The treatments are said to be ‘Alpine-inspired’ and offer a number of exercise classes on high-quality equipment. Swissotel has a reputation for offering similarities in its hotels but is also keen to point out unique features. To continue this, they will look to draw inspiration from the local area.
Local architect ACIK Architecture and Design Studio will be working alongside Jerde Partnership, based in California, on the design side of things in a building that will also include over 80 serviced residences. These will vary on size from one to three bedrooms and will also offer two-floor luxury apartments with views looking out over the city.
The President of FRHI International, Jennifer Fox, said “Bulgaria is a thriving member of the European Union and a country that is focused on increasing investment and furthering its economic growth; entering the market aligns with our growth strategy and the destination is a wonderful addition for us. We’re also very happy to be partnering with Garanti Koza, an established and experienced developer, on a high-profile project that is certain to strengthen Swissotel’s well-established reputation in this part of the world.
Swissotel are no strangers to new developments and have just recently opened a 1,700 square metre site in Turkey that offers seven treatments rooms. Furthermore, news has recently broken regarding a takeover bid from Accor Hotels who are attempting to buy FRHI in a deal worth around €2.6 billion.
