Jaworzno stadium competition won by Mateusz Tanski

Mateusz Tanski & Associates has been named as the winners of the competition that took place to decide who will design a new sports centre in Jaworzno. The architecture studio, based in Warsaw, presented the design which resembles a scattered pile of rocks in an attempt to take inspiration from the well-known area. Six free-standing buildings set to look like scattered boulders will sit around the 1,000 capacity athletics stadium with inspiration being drawn throughout from the quarry walls that surround the complex.
Mateusz Tanski has said “Since the beginning, we thought about the environment of the site and how the sports centre could fit. We were determined to integrate the project with the nature and that was our biggest inspiration in designing these stone-shaped elements.”
The complex as a whole will cover 45,000 square feet of space including the main stadium, set to host a number of regional track and field events, as well as restaurants, more sports facilities, and hotels for athletes, tourists and spectators. It is thought that the first stage of construction will begin on the stadium towards the end of 2016 at a cost of around €2.3 million. Both public and private investment will be used for the construction with the remainder of buildings to follow at a later date.
Tanski continued “The project will be important for Jaworzno; when the city ran the competition, they didn't want something simple. They invited architects from all over the country to think of new and exciting ideas. They’re planning something that will interest people all over Poland and Europe.”
