Good year for German fitness market

Although the country has yet to reach ‘gym enthusiast’ level, it was good news once again for Germany as the fitness market witnessed growth once more. When compared to the previous year, 2015 saw a 4.2% increase in the amount of people going to the gym; in terms of the population, it is thought that nearly 10 million people were members of a gym come the end of 2015. This growth has also seen the amount of gyms increase to over 8,300, 3.2% up from 2014.

However, there is still some work to be done in Germany as the figures are still relatively low when compared to other European countries; Norway and Sweden, for example, have 19.4% and 16.7% (respectively) of their population going to the gym on a regular basis whereas in Germany, it is just 11.5%. The new figures recently released also show that individual gyms are somewhat suffering at the hands of chains, thought to be as a result of the discounts offered. Furthermore, much of the population are steering towards ‘electrical stimulation’ or cross-fit to stay in shape.
