Lake Baikal to transform into hotspot after Chinese investment

In an attempt to increase tourism around the world’s deepest lake, Lake Baikal, around €10 billion is set to be spent by Chinese investors in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Led by Chungjingxin, a consortium are attempting to create a ‘world-class tourism zone’ by investing in the old Baikalsk Paper and Pulp Mill.
In order to develop the SEZ with the investment group, Grand Baikal, a tour company based in Russia, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding. In the plans, the infrastructure will be developed to improve facilities to a level where they can accommodate a large flow of tourists to the location.
