David Lloyd Leisure acquires the German Based Health City club

In a remarkable entrance into the German markets, David Lloyd Leisure(DLL) the Health Club operator has continued in its expansion bid by acquiring the Health City branded club located in Bad Homburg, near Frankfurt. The management of DLL plans to spend over €10m (US$11.7m, £8.8m) to rebrand and develop the site in its bid to establish a leading health and fitness club in the region. The project will include a total refurbishing of the gym, the two group exercise studios, and the café bar. Other areas that will be renovated include the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the HIIT class StudioBlaze, the outdoor spa garden and terrace, wet changing rooms, adult only and business zones, a children’s soft plat area and the DL kid’s facilities. In addition, the spa, indoor changing rooms, and indoor tennis courts will be completely refurbished. The signing of this deal means that DLL now has 15 clubs in the mainland Europe, with locations in Holland, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Italy, France, and the new clubs in Germany. It can be recalled that the company has over 99 clubs in the UK.In his words, the DLL chief executive Glenn Earlam said that the company remains focused on seeking expansion opportunities in Europe in view of achieving more acquisitions and building new cites.Earlam stated that “We believe that there is a huge untapped market in Germany for the family-focused health and leisure clubs. We hope that our acquisition of the Bad Homburg will be the first of many DLL clubs in the German market.”Earlam acknowledged that their ambitious growth plans in the European market is succeeding and they are interested in expanding to more regions in Spain, Holland, Belgium, Ireland, and Italy and other new markets.
