Bicycle and e-bike sales up in Germany

Gross sales of bicycles together with e-bikes in Germany was up by 4 % to 2.8 million units in the first six months of 2014 when compared with the previous year, ZIV, the country’s manufacturers federation says. On the vendor side, the German market saw a small decrease because of overstocking from last year. Both domestic manufacturing and imports declined in the low single-digits as a result of the need to clear warehouses on the retail side. Imports were down by 2.5 percent to 1.8 million bicycles. The primary supplying countries were Cambodia, Poland, Taiwan and Bulgaria. E-bikes as a category claim a market share of some 15 % in volume with sales of about 450 ,000 units in the first six months. The estimated total number of e-bikes in Germany is now at some 1.8 million.
