Fairmont Golden Prague: A Historic Hotel Reimagined to Open This Spring

2025-01-27 source own

After four years of extensive reconstruction, the iconic former InterContinental hotel in Prague is set to reopen this spring under its new name, Fairmont Golden Prague, operated by the prestigious Fairmont hotel chain. According to reports from E15.cz, the grand reopening marks the culmination of a historic transformation, making it one of the most significant hotel investments in Prague’s history.

A Record-Breaking Investment

The reconstruction, carried out by the R2G investment group, represents an investment of approximately CZK 4 billion (€159 million). Combined with the CZK 6 billion (€239 million) purchase price in 2018, the total project cost exceeds CZK 10 billion (€398 million), making it the most expensive hotel investment ever in Prague.

The building use approval is expected between late January and early February 2025, with the first guests welcomed by early spring.

A New Hub for Luxury Experiences

The reopening of Fairmont Golden Prague also brings opportunities for luxury retail. The hotel’s retail spaces will house elite brands, including the Latvian goldsmith Grenardi, the renowned Italian jewelry groups Damiani and Pasquale Bruni, further elevating the hotel as a hub for high-end shopping and luxury experiences in Central Europe.

Leadership with Global Expertise

Leading this revitalized hotel is Gerhard Struger, an Austrian hospitality veteran with over 30 years of experience managing luxury hotels across Europe and Asia. Before joining the Fairmont Golden Prague, Struger served as Regional Vice President for Sofitel and SO/ brands in Central Europe and as General Manager of Sofitel Munich. His expertise promises to position the Fairmont Golden Prague as a benchmark for luxury accommodations in the region.

A Building Steeped in History

Originally constructed between 1968 and 1974, the hotel’s roots trace back to a collaboration between the Czechoslovak government and PanAm, which owned the InterContinental brand at the time. It was intended to accommodate PanAm airline guests in its 400 rooms. However, following the political changes of 1968, the Čedok travel agency assumed ownership and operation as American companies were forced out of the project.

Fairmont Golden Prague: A Landmark of Central Europe

The reopening of Fairmont Golden Prague symbolizes more than just a luxurious hotel. It’s a testament to Prague’s business development expertise in Central Europe and its ability to attract business partners and investments in the luxury and tourism sectors. The hotel's transformation is expected to draw affluent travelers, bolster Prague’s status as a top destination, and foster partnerships in the Central European (CE) hospitality market.

Whether you're visiting Prague for business or leisure, the Fairmont Golden Prague will offer an unparalleled blend of historical charm, modern luxury, and world-class service. Stay tuned for the exact opening date and experience the revival of this legendary landmark.
