Russia struggling to meet 2018 stadium deadlines

According to Russian officials working on hosting the event, the country are struggling to meet the stadium deadlines for the World Cup less than two years away, but as always with these large sporting events they will be ready in time. Now, both Nizhny Novgorod and Volgograd have fallen behind schedule.

Originally, the completion date for both was set for December 2017, a little over a year from now, but this has now been put back to 2018. Although there was no exact date, the two 45,000-seater stadiums will not be ready next year.

In a construction project that has lasted more than ten years, earlier we saw trouble for the 68,000-seater stadium in St Petersburg. Over time, this has seen tremendous delays and cost increases that have threatened the project as a whole. Although the organisers of the World Cup haven't yet commented on these most recent delays, they have said in the past that they expect everything to be ready for football’s greatest competition.
