Winter Olympics city search for Switzerland

After announcing their intentions to enter the running to host the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, the next step was to find an appropriate city and this process has now begun. Guy Parmelin, Swiss Minister of Sport, met with a number of high profile figures in sports federations which saw them decide that plans would start in its attempt to win the Games in 10 years time.

A second vote then followed this successful first one regarding how their bid would be financed as they look to host the event for the first time since 1948, in St Moritz. After only hosting it once before that, in 1928, all those involved feel as though it is finally time to win the Games again for the country.

Jorg Schild, Swiss Olympic President, has said “Drastic reforms of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of the agenda 2020 have led to applications from smaller countries like Switzerland. With our mountains and long tradition in winter sports, we are predestined to host the Winter Olympic Games.”

September 2017 will see the final decision be made after a number of referendums.
