The speedy German was aggressive all week, and in addition to the green jersey he also won a stage, netted three podium finishes, and wore the yellow leader’s jersey at the “Race to the Sun.” The team had to work for the jersey on the last day of racing, helping Degenkolb win the intermediate sprint on the 128km stage, which finished on the Promenade des Anglais in the seaside city of Nice. “Winning the green jersey is a nice success for the team and a reward for all the hard work here at Paris-Nice,” Degenkolb said after Sunday’s final stage. “The guys controlled it well before the first sprint and those three points were very important.” Indeed, Degenkolb’s dash to the front on his Propel Advanced SL proved to be the difference, as he won the overall points classification by 2 points. In the end, the Propel Advanced SL won out, taking the top overall score compiled from five categories: quantitative lab testing, subjective ride quality, value, user-friendliness and weight. “The Propel is one of he slickest bikes we’ve tested in the [wind] tunnel,” Velo reported. “It didn’t so much crush the competition as it did streak past, lightning quick. It had the best scores in our deflection test, an indication of lateral stiffness; in the real world, where churning legs and carbon craftsmanship are melded into human-powered machinery, the Propel feels like it does just that—propel you to greater speed.” The Propel Advanced SL scored a perfect 30 out of 30 in the scientific testing category, topping the competition, which included the Ridley Noah FAST, the BH G6 Red, and the Trek Madone 6.2. And its total score of 82 in all categories earned it the honor of best aero road bike overall. Describing the lab results, Velo wrote: "The Propel was quickest at every yaw angle in the wind tunnel, on par, or slightly better, than the Cervélo S5 from last year’s aero bike test, which set the benchmark for fast. On average, that meant a savings of nearly 10 watts across all yaw angles when compared to the second place BH, and 22 watts over both the Ridley and Trek. The Giant Propel is the first aero road bike in the history of VeloLab to score best in both the tunnel and lab. It’s a fast, stiff bike, without question.” 2013-12-03
